Arsenal’s first Champions League knockout game in seven years ended in defeat as Galeno’s late strike earned Porto a 1-0 win on Wednesday evening.
The Gunners arrived in Portugal for their last 16 first leg tie in sensational form, having scored 11 times across their previous two games.
Mikel Arteta’s side were frustrated by their Portuguese opponents, though, and struggled to create any real chances.
The game looked almost certain to be heading for a draw until the fourth minute of added time, when Galeno curled a strike past David Raya and into the corner of the net from just outside the box.
Victory for Porto means that the Gunners will have to overturn the deficit to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition, but Arteta will also be keen to ensure the result doesn’t hinder their Premier League form.
Having finished second in the league last term, Arsenal will be desperate to go one better this time around.
Despite their busy schedule on the pitch, it appears that those in charge of the club’s recruitment have been busy off it.
Yildiz has attracted interest from Arsenal
As per Aksam via TEAMtalk, the North London outfit are ‘ready’ to splash out on Juventus teenager Kenan Yildiz.
The 18-year-old has attracted interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United, but the report claims that the Gunners are prepared to spend around £34 million on the youngster.
Yildiz is a versatile attacker who primarily plays as an attacking midfielder, although he is also capable of operating on the flank.
The Turkish attacker has attracted comparisons to Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero.
Yildiz joined Juventus’ academy from Bayern Munich in 2022 and made his senior debut for the Italian side on the opening day of the current campaign, as a substitute against Hellas Verona.
He has now played 17 times for The Old Lady, scoring three goals, and his impressive performances have attracted interest from some of Europe’s top clubs.
