Six teams—three Division II teams and three NAIA squads—are vying to be called champion in this double-elimination tournament.

No. 1 seed Talladega College, No. 4 seed Wiley University and No. 6 seed Florida Memorial University represent NAIA. Florida Memorial won last year’s tournament.

The Division II schools consist of No. 2 Bluefield State University, No. 3 seed Edward Waters University and No. 5 seed Miles College.

Day 1 was Wednesday. The tournament will continue on Thursday and Friday before concluding with the championship on Saturday.

Here’s a look at Wednesday’s scores, recaps and a look at Thursday’s schedule too.

Edward Waters University 8, Florida Memorial University 5

Wiley University 10, Miles College 0

Bluefield State University 9, Edward Waters University 7

Thursday Schedule (Times ET)

10 a.m.: Talladega College vs. Wiley University

1:30 p.m.: Miles College vs. Edward Waters University (loser eliminated from tournament)

5 p.m.: Florida Memorial University vs. Talladega/Wiley loser (loser of this game eliminated from tournament)

Edward Waters University 8, Florida Memorial University 5

Erickson Matos went 4-for-4 with three RBI and Caden Hutchinson scored four runs to lead Edward Waters to an 8-5 win over Florida Memorial.

The two teams entered the fifth tied at one before Edward Waters scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth for a 6-1 advantage.

Anthony Bayyat got the win for Edward Waters, allowing just one run through seven innings. He got into some trouble in the top of the eighth and couldn’t finish that half, which ended with Edward Waters scoring four runs to cut the EWU lead to 6-5. Keith Harden’s three-run homer, hit off reliever Carson Hurst, got Florida Memorial close.

However, EWU got some breathing room in the eighth, with the capper being a Matos RBI single.

Wiley University 10, Miles College 0

Wiley cruised to a 10-0 mercy rule win over Miles that ended after six-and-a-half innings.

Jaylen Cream threw seven shutout frames, striking out three while allowing just four hits and two walks. Abel Rodriguez Jr., Amir Mason and Ajari Camp had two hits apiece for Wiley, who had 11 overall on the day in addition to six walks.

Wiley did nearly all of its damage over the third and fourth innings, scoring eight total runs during that span. In the third inning, Mason’s RBI single later led to Jhan Carlos Javier’s two-RBI double for three runs. In the fourth inning, Jacob Perez’s two-RBI single kickstarted a five-run frame.

Wiley only had three extra base hits (all doubles), but small ball worked to perfection on this day en route to the dominant win.

Bluefield State University 9, Edward Waters University 7

Bluefield State jumped out to an 8-0 lead after six innings but held on for dear life late en route to the 9-7 win.

Chris Larkin led the Bluefield State bats by going 3-for-5 with a home run. Peyton Lewis went 3-for-4 with three RBI, and outfielder Noah Moritz added two RBI.

Bluefield State’s big inning was the fourth, when the team scored four to take a 5-0 lead and knock starting pitcher Elvin Polanco out of the game. Lewis had a two-RBI single in this frame. Larkin hit a solo shot in the fifth for a 6-0 lead. Bluefield State scored one more in the fifth and one more in the sixth, and a mercy rule win was on the table.

Edward Waters had other plans, scoring three in the seventh (each run on an RBI single). Moritz got one back for Bluefield State with an RBI groundout, but Edward Waters staged a great ninth-inning rally with four runs capped by Hugo Schoening’s two-RBI single.

That brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, but a fielder’s choice ended the game.

Dave Mitchum paced Edward Waters at the top of the order with three hits.
