Brushing Aside the Condolences, a Dejected JT Poston Is at Discomfort After a Single Stroke Cost Him a $260K Hole: “Trying to Win”

The 3M Open is one of the most exciting events before the FedEx Cup Playoffs commence on the PGA Tour. In Blaine, Minnesota, the golfers were not only chasing the $7.8 million payout but also their last chance to stand up in the FedEx Cup standings so that they could qualify for the playoffs. As the tournament is now concluded, America’s own Lee Hodges emerged victorious and took a payday of $1.404 million home. As the third day of the tournament ended, JT Poston was in the T2 position, but as of the fourth day, he was still there, but at some cost!

Just like any other golfer, Poston was really looking forward to winning his third PGAT event, but it just wasn’t in the cards for him. The golfer is now brushing aside the condolences, as he is in extreme discomfort.

Poston was having a good day during the final round until things went a little bit south for him on the 18th hole. As the golfer approached the 18th hole, he had a 3-stroke lead over the next player on the leaderboard as he sat in 2nd place. However, his 3-stroke lead fell in vain thanks to a triple bogey at the final hole. As a result, the golfer tied for the T2 position with two other golfers, Martin Laird and Kevin Streelman.

If the 2X PGA Tour winner had stood alone at the second position on the leaderboard, he would have won $850,000, but as a result of that unfortunate triple bogey, his winning share came down to $590,200. There was a difference of a whopping $260K in his winning share because of one hole. What an unfortunate situation, right?

CBS’ Kyle Porter pointed out the same thing online: the golfer needed to make 7 to be alone in the second position, but he ended up making 8. A single stroke had cost him $260,000. To the reporters’ tweet, the golfer replied, “Not out here to finish 2nd. Trying to win.” He then said that he would make the same decision 10 out of 10 times, even if it upped his winning chance by the slightest.

With such good form during the whole tournament, what happened to Poston on the final hole? How did things not go as per his plan?

In order to win the 3M Open on the final par-5 18th hole, the 30-year-old needed something heroic and magical. The final hole on the course is wrapped around by water, and Poston’s drive was just within inches of the lake. With just a decent lie in the rough just inside the penalty area, the golfer opted to play. From 213 yards out, the 2X PGAT winner still had fair chances to shoot an eagle. But sadly, his second shot came out short, and it hit some rocks, ricocheting backward straight into the water.

He shot for the third time from a distance of 115 yards for a birdie to finish with a score of 24 under, but sadly he couldn’t. He carded a triple bogey, which dropped from being a single one with 20 under at T2 to being tied at T2 with 17 under.
