Deontay Wilder faced speculation about his potential retirement after enduring his third career defeat. Initially hinting at stepping away from the sport, Wilder later retracted those comments, affirming his commitment to return to the boxing ring. The ‘Day of Reckoning’ event unfolded with the unexpected outcome of Joseph Parker securing a unanimous decision in his favor against Wilder.

Frank Warren, the promotional lead for the event, observed signs of an issue with Wilder during the fight. Even though Wilder refrained from providing any excuses for his loss, Wilder’s co-manager, Shelly Finkel, informed Warren about a pre-fight problem that probably had an impact on his performance.

In the eighth round of the bout, Joseph Parker managed to rock Deontay Wilder, posing a significant threat to Wilder. Despite finding himself in trouble, the Alabama native demonstrated resilience and weathered the storm. Throughout the twelve rounds, Parker strategically utilized his boxing skills to evade the majority of Wilder’s impactful punches.

Even when Wilder did manage to connect, Parker showcased his durability by absorbing those blows effectively. Frank Warren told Talksport, “I thought he looked pretty dreadful.” He commended Parker for his immaculate performance as well. Warren added, “I was just talking to Shelly Finkel and they were telling me he had a problem.”

Furthermore, he continued, “He went into one of those cryochambers and sat in it for a long time. I don’t know. There’s going to be some excuse.” However, Wilder made it clear in his post-fight interview that he wouldn’t be giving any excuses about the fight.

Even before the fight happened, many fans speculated that Deontay Wilder would make excuses if he lost and blame it on his royal outfit. However, after the fight, he celebrated following the final bell leaving the boxing fans puzzled. In his post-fight interview, Wilder asserted that he believed he did enough to win the fight. A statement that widely differs from the consensus that he was outboxed in nearly every round.

He said, “I did [think he did enough to win], but my timing was off a little bit. Joseph did a great job in avoiding my punches. We make no excuses tonight, it was a good fight and we move on to the next thing.”
