“Gotta Get Rid of Him”: Stephen A. Smith Warns Tyson Fury About Facing Mike Tyson’s Protege in Their Oct 28 Showdown
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Tyson Fury has a fight scheduled for October 28 in Riyadh. He will face former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in a ‘crossover bout.’ Ngannou once unfortunately struggled with mental health issues. He also overcame addictions to cocaine and alcohol while losing 112 pounds along the way. His story is inspirational, certainly. Adding more gloss to his achievements is the fact that he is unbeaten.

Ngannou is presently training under the watchful eye of former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson. ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ is tutoring Ngannou in his signature boxing style. The demands placed on one’s body there are enormous. Reportedly, Francis Ngannou struggled with it, too. It makes for a scary combination, that would be enough to deter just about anybody. According to the host of his eponymous show, Stephen A. Smith believes Tyson Fury is not anybody.

Tyson Fury is undefeated

Stephen A. Smith does not believe the ‘Gypsy King’ would find that prospect scary. Fury has a 33-0-1 record, with the sole tie coming against Deontay Wilder. He is undefeated, as Smith pointed out. Moreover, Tyson Fury just put pen to paper on a contract scheduling a bout versus Oleksandr Usyk. That fight on December 23rd, in Saudi Arabia once more, will see the heavyweight championship on the line.

‘Iron Mike’ predicted that Ngannou would land a knockout punch when the pair squared off in Riyadh. At the same time, Smith thought it unlikely that Tyson Fury considers him a legitimate threat. According to talkSPORT, Fury was looking to fight either Usyk or fellow Briton Anthony Joshua but negotiations broke down. The bout with Ngannou was scheduled after that. It appeared to be almost an afterthought. Regardless, Smith opined that Fury needs to put Ngannou out of commission.

Ngannou can cause Fury problems

Stephen A. Smith thought that Ngannou held too much power. He said as much on his show in the following words. Smith noted, “Francis Ngannou is training with boxing legend Mike Tyson for his fight with Tyson Fury. Fury’s boxing record is undefeated, 33-0-1. That one tie was with Deontay Wilder, their first fight of their trilogy. And by the way, per ESPN, Fury and Olexandr Usyk have signed contracts for an undisputed heavyweight championship fight in Saudi Arabia for December 23rd.

“I mean, d**n, talk about expecting nothing from Francis Ngannou. Why would you do this if you’re Tyson Fury? Clearly you’re not expecting Francis Ngannou to cause you any kind of problems whatsoever, right? Tyson Fury can’t afford to keep him around. He’s got too much power. You gotta get rid of him. You just have to.”, he continued.

Tyson Fury appears to be thinking of the fight with Francis Ngannou as relatively inconsequential, according to Smith. While the title is not on the line, Smith opined that Ngannou could make things difficult for Fury. He noted that Fury needed to make a statement and take care of business.

Stephen A. Smith pointed out that Mike Tyson training Francis Ngannou is not a prospect that would scare Tyson Fury. Smith noted the ‘Gypsy King’ appeared to not be as interested in taking on Ngannou as he would someone like Usyk or Joshua. With Ngannou holding too much power, Smith believed that Fury had no choice but to beat the former UFC champion convincingly.
