Daniel’s Brettig’s view on a ‘shambolic’ day for New Zealand

Wellington: Take a dash of Mark Waugh and Matthew Elliott’s collision, add a pinch of Lance Klusener and Allan Donald’s World Cup run out. Mix it with a healthy helping of New Zealand self-doubt, and you have the recipe for something truly shambolic.

That something is what befell Kane Williamson and the Black Caps at Basin Reserve, in a moment of madness so chaotic that his run out should be added to one of those internet lists of contemporary photographs that resemble Renaissance paintings.

3.37pm

Lyon dropped off last ball

Struggling night watchman Nathan Lyon was dropped off the last ball of the day as Australia went to stumps on the second day at 2/13 in their second innings, an overall lead of 217. Lyon edged a delivery from Matt Henry which flew to New Zealand captain Tim Southee at third slip. It hit his hands chest high and fell to the ground. Lyon appears to be struggling with a hip injury after being struck while batting.

Lyon received on field treatment

Nathan Lyon is struggling with a right hip problem after being struck while batting as a night watchman. Lyon needed treatment on the field and was regularly flexing his right leg. However he was able to run between wickets.

Labuschagne fails again

Marnus Labuschagne has failed again, caught down the leg side for just two as Australia slumped to 2/4, bringing night watchman Nathan Lyon to the crease. It comes after he was caught in the slips for just one in the first innings, leaving Labuschagne with a top score of 10 in his past six innings. The three runs in total he scored in this Test are the latest he has scored in any Test match.

Smith out third ball without scoring

Steve Smith has lasted just three balls in Australia’s second innings, chopping a delivery from New Zealand captain Tim Southee into his stumps. The ball was short of a length wide outside the off stump and swinging away as Smith attempted to punch it off the back foot into the covers.

New Zealand all out 179 as Australia bat again

Australian captain Pat Cummins has decided not to enforce the follow-on after New Zealand were bowled out for 179, 204 runs behind. Nathan Lyon was the most successful of the Australian bowlers, claiming 4/43. Matt Henry was last man out, caught at deep mid-wicket for 42 from 34 balls attempting to hit his fifth six.

Nathan Lyon claimed his third wicket as New Zealand captain Tim Southee was well caught at short leg by Travis Head for just one. It was a fine take by Head, throwing out his right hand, but a meek dismissal by Southee.

2.36pm

Phillips out as New Zealand lose eighth wicket

Glenn Phillips has been caught in the deep hooking for 71 from 70 balls, leaving New Zealand 8/161, still 222 runs behind Australia. Phillips went after a bouncer from Josh Hazlewood but top-edged it straight to Mitchell Starc.

New Zealand pass 150 as Henry hits third six

New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry has hit Nathan Lyon for a third six as New Zealand passed 150. Glenn Phillips brought up the milestone with his 13th boundary, a wonderful cover drive off Josh Hazlewood. After 40 overs New Zealand were 7/159 with Phillips 68 from 66 balls and Henry 27 from 25 balls.

2.20pm

That’s drinks with New Zealand 7/144

Well at least New Zealand have managed to take the score well past three figures thanks to Glenn Phillips after falling to 5/29. Phillips was unbeaten on 62 at the last drinks break with New Zealand 7/144. Matt Henry was 19 from 17 balls.
