Details on next year’s Galaxy S25, S25+ and S25 Ultra handsets are becoming clear, and Samsung looks set to finally deliver some key features to the upcoming Galaxy flagship.
Satellite connectivity was a rumoured feature expected on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, if not the entire Galaxy S24 family, but it was nowhere to be seen at January’s Galaxy Unpacked launch event.
Following a detailed look through the code of several Samsung apps, the team at Android Authority has picked up several strings, texts, and notes in the code that all point towards satellite connectivity.
Two examples in Samsung’s phone app are “You’re in satellite mode. You can send text messages, including to 911. Emergency calls may still connect if a mobile network is available near you” and “You can send and receive text messages in Satellite mode. Emergency calls may still connect if a mobile network is available near you.”
Samsung has been working on satellite connectivity for a number of years, with hints of an appearance on the 2023’s Galaxy S23 and this year’s Galaxy S24 not coming to pass in the released product. Since then, Apple has successfully implemented a satellite emergency calling feature in iOS and has been using several case studies to reinforce the potential of the service.
Google is also bringing wider support for satellite connectivity to Android 15. Writing on the Android Developers blog, Dave Burke notes:
“Apps can use ServiceState.isUsingNonTerrestrialNetwork() to detect when a device is connected to a satellite, giving them more awareness of why full network services may be unavailable. Additionally, Android 15 provides support for SMS/ MMS applications as well as preloaded RCS applications to use satellite connectivity for sending and receiving messages.”
With increased awareness, several years of development, and Google’s additional support in Android, the Galaxy S25 Ultra—and perhaps the rest of the S25 family—will finally deliver some Space-bound features to Samsung’s Galaxy.
