Actress Shannen Doherty, best known for her roles on both the iconic 1990s teen series “Beverly Hills, 90210” and the supernatural fantasy drama “Charmed,” has died. She was 53.
Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane confirmed the news, the actress passing away on Saturday after many years battling breast cancer which she was first diagnosed with in 2015.
In a statement, Sloane says Doherty was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog Bowie when she passed.
Doherty rose to household name status playing Brenda Walsh, the leading female star of FOX’s “Beverly Hills, 90210” where she played opposite Jason Priestly as her brother Brandon and Luke Perry as her early love interest Dylan.
The show was a massive hit and its stars came under intense scrutiny. Doherty exited at the end of season four amid reports of friction with other cast members. Time healed and Dohery returned for both the 2008 revival “90210” and the 2019 satire “BH90210”.
Doherty next found herself in a key role on “Charmed,” starring as one of three witchly sisters alongside Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs. Her character was killed off when she left the series at the end of the third season.
Though she hit it big in her twenties, Doherty had been acting since she was a child – her first film role was voicing animated classic “The Secret of NIMH” before starring in famed dark comedy “Heathers,” Kevin Smith’s “Mallrats,” Gregg Araki’s “Nowhere,” and films like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and “Burning Palms”.
Her TV career spanned forty years from child performances in “Voyagers!,” “Little House on the Prairie,” “Our House” and the original “Magnum P.I.” to starring in a bunch of telemovies like “Category 7: The End of the World,” “A Burning Passion: The Margaret Mitchell Story,” and “Hell on Heels: The Battle of Mary Kay”. Other TV work included appearing on “North Shore,” “Riverdale” and hosting “Scare Tactics” as well as other reality shows.
