PlayStation Executive Cites Market Conditions as the Driving Force Behind 12-Month Subscription Adjustment
In a recent interview, Sony’s top business executive at PlayStation, Eric Lempel, addressed the recent price increase for PlayStation Plus 12-month subscriptions, which affected all tiers and was implemented globally. The price hike, amounting to approximately 30%, stirred discussions among consumers and led to questions about its necessity.
In September, Sony raised the cost of 12 months of PlayStation Plus Essential from $59.99 to $79.99, PlayStation Plus Extra from $99.99 to $134.99, and PlayStation Plus Premium from $119.99 to $159.99. The company had issued a brief statement at the time, explaining the adjustment by stating that it would enable them to maintain the delivery of high-quality games and added-value benefits to PS Plus subscribers.
During the interview with Barron’s, Lempel offered insight into Sony’s rationale for the price increase. He emphasized that the decision was a response to evolving market conditions and the company’s commitment to enhancing the PS Plus experience. Lempel stated, “We want to make PlayStation Plus great. With our reboot last year and introducing the tier system, a lot of consumers have recognized that there’s a lot of value in PlayStation 5.”
Lempel further explained, “Like practically everything else in the world, we have to look at our pricing and we have to adjust to market conditions. I’m happy to say, unlike a lot of other subscription services out there, we haven’t touched the PlayStation Plus pricing for 85% of the world in many years. So, this was the first time we did something there.”
The decision to adjust PS Plus prices reflects a broader trend across the subscription-based entertainment industry, with various services, including Xbox Game Pass, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Disney+, and Netflix, raising their prices throughout the year. Sony’s objective, according to Lempel, is to ensure that PS Plus remains a competitive and high-value offering for gamers, considering evolving market dynamics.
