Popstars goes viral – new fans shocked by brutality of show that launched Kym Marsh and Mylene Klass
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Those who were watching TV back in the early 2000s will certainly remember Popstars, the singing talent show that launched the careers of Myleene Klass and Kym Marsh.

The documentary-style show saw singers try to impress a panel of judges – ‘Nasty’ Nigel Lythgoe, Nicki Chapman and Paul Adam – who would then place them in a new pop group.

The show winners, Danny Foster, Myleene Klass, Kym Marsh, Suzanne Shaw and Noel Sullivan, formed hit group Hear’Say. And the runners-up, Michelle Heaton, Tony Lundon, Kevin Simm, Jessica Taylor and Kelli Young, went on to create the chart-topping group Liberty X.

Now, two decades later, a thread discussing the show’s most brutal moments has gone viral on X, previously known as Twitter, sparking a new conversation about the series – and introducing it to a number of younger TV viewers.

Here are some of the show’s most shocking moments….

Here are some of the show’s most shocking moments….

Kym Marsh’s ‘secret children’

One dramatic scene in the show saw Kym getting ‘exposed’ for having two ‘secret children.’

The rather bizarre scenes began with Nigel telling the cameras: “I got a phone call from a solicitor that’s informed me of some news regarding Kym that has absolutely devastated me and I want to get of the bottom of it.”

He then shared that Kym had not disclosed that she was mum to two children, David and Emilie. Confronting Kym about this, Nigel said: “All I can say is how disappointed I am.

“Number one, I get to hear from a solicitor when all of the times we’ve said to you ‘is there anything else we need to know about because the press are going to find all the skeletons in your closet?’ You thought because you had two children it would affect you getting into the band.”

Kym is told she’s ‘gotten fat’

After scenes from the show spread on social media, many of those who had not watched the show when it was first on were left shocked at one scene, in which Nigel told Kym that she had ‘gotten fat.’

Kym Marsh being told she’d put on weight

Nigel certainly lived up to his ‘Nasty Nigel’ nickname when he told Kym she had ‘gotten fat’ over Christmas

Speaking to Kym, who was only a size 12 at the time, when the contestants returned from Christmas with their families, Nigel said: “You need to lose some weight. Christmas is over and the goose has gotten fat.

“I think you’ve put weight on over Christmas and I think you needed to lose weight before Christmas.” The insults didn’t end there, with Kym later being cruelly dubbed the “fat one” by a radio presenter.

Darius Danesh performs a bizarre Britney cover

Among the show’s contestants was the late Darius Danesh, who was eliminated after a rather off-key performance of the hit Britney Spears song Baby One More Time. Following the performance, Paul said: “He has talent, but I’m not sure if he’s the right person to fit into a five piece band or even a 100 piece band.”

Echoing these thoughts, Nigel added: “To do something like he has just done there which is a complete show off that doesn’t work is crazy.”

After being told he had not made it through, Darius asked if he would have made it through if he had sung a different song – to which the judges said yes.

However, not one to let this get him down, Darius returned to TV screens the following year on Pop Idol, where he finished in third place behind Will Young and Gareth Gates, and he went on to enjoy a rather successful music career until his death in August 2022.

Contestant breaks their nose

In one of the show’s challenges, the contestants were tasked with taking part in trust issues, in order to allow them to bond before forming a group. One such task saw the signing hopefuls fall into each other’s arms from a height.

However, this didn’t go quite to plan for one contestant, who jumped face first into the pit, resulting in a broken nose, and medical staff being called in to help.

Contestant eliminated over her looks

Despite impressing the judges with her singing talent, one contestant named Claire was told she wouldn’t be processing in the competition as she didn’t “look like a popstar”.

Speaking to the cameras following his horrible moment, Claire simply said: ‘I’m not the kind of image they’re looking for. I knew that looking around the room, everyone was so different from me.”

Hear’Say are left without running water

After the formation of Hear’Say, the band were moved into a house where they stayed while recording and promoting their first album. However, rather than the nice property they may have been expecting the band were put home in a rather shabby home, that didn’t even had running water.

One scene saw a plumber arrive at the house, while an understandably upset Kym told the cameras: ‘The thing is this, we’re supposed to be going for a photoshoot tomorrow and chances are we’re not going to be able to have a shower, wash our hair, even wash our faces.”
