F1 Austrian Grand Prix 2023 live updates, highlights and result as Verstappen starts on pole for fourth straight race
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed his fifth race victory in succession at the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix as he continues to push towards a third World Drivers’ Championship title.

After claiming top spot in qualifying on Friday, the Dutchman followed that up with victory in the Sprint race on Saturday, before winning Sunday’s Grand Prix in usual dominant fashion.

Despite losing his lead of the race following his opening pitstop, he roared back to get past Charles Leclerc before registering the fastest lap of the race at the death to claim the maximum points on offer.

Leclerc himself put together a solid race to finish in P2 for Ferrari, whilst Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez recovered from his poor qualifying showing to finish P3.

Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll rounded out the top 10 as they all bagged valuable points.

F1 Austrian Grand Prix 2023 live updates, highlights: As it happens

CHEQUERED FLAG: MAX VERSTAPPEN WINS THE 2023 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX!! Yet again the Dutchman proves impossible to stop as he takes his fifth race victory in succession.

— Formula 1 (@F1) July 2, 2023

Lap 70: Verstappen pits. It’s a lightning stop as he puts on a set of soft tyres to try and claim the fastest lap of this race.

Lap 68: Perez still sits 12 seconds behind Leclerc and won’t be able to challenge to make it a Red Bull 1-2 here but it’s a great recovery driver never the less.

Lap 64: Not long left to go in this race and Verstappen leads Leclerc by 22 seconds. It’s a further 12 second gap back to Perez in P3.

Lap 61: Perez finally gets past Sainz! After a stunning battle between the pair, the Mexican star finally grabs P3 and the final podium spot.

The two SO VERY NEARLY TOUCH! 🫣#AustrianGP #F1 pic.twitter.com/T9q1rpCAvh

— Formula 1 (@F1) July 2, 2023

Lap 59: It’s proving an enthralling battle between Sainz and Perez. It seems a matter of time until the Red Bull gets past the Spaniard but he’s putting up a big defence.

Lap 57: Norris locks up at corner three and as a result, Perez powers past the McLaren driver on the run down to corner four. P4 and counting for the Red Bull star!

Lap 55: With a 16 second lead over Leclerc, Verstappen is romping home to his fifth successive race victory here. He did lose his lead early on after others pitted under safety car conditions but he’s making easy work of this Grand Prix now.

Lap 52: Perez has now come in for his last stop of this Grand Prix. He resumes in P5 behind Sainz and Norris who he’ll be eager to chase down, Leclerc may also be a target for the Mexican maestro.

Lap 50: Verstappen pits and he comes back out ahead of his teammate in the lead of this race. Another comfortable win this afternoon for the Red Bull driver by the looks of it.

Lap 49: Sainz and Leclerc pit in back to back laps with the latter sitting comfortably in P3. Perez ahead will have to stop again in this race so a P2 finish should be the minimum Leclerc takes this afternoon. That’d be a boost for Ferrari!

Lap 45: With 25 laps left of this race, its Verstappen who leads from Leclerc, Sainz, Perez and Alonso. There’s a lot of drivers on different strategies however so there’s still plenty more action to come.

We might get some late rain here too..

Lap 43: As we enter the middle phase of this race, there’s a flurry of pitstops. Norris is in which allows Hamilton to get clean air which he’ll try to use to its full extent. Perez overtakes Alonso for P5 elsewhere.

— Formula 1 (@F1) July 2, 2023

Lap 40: Albon is the latest to take a five second penalty. It looks like a case of everyone will be in the penalty club today at this rate!

Lap 37: Red Bull’s main man has already pulled out a 3 second gap to Leclerc in just two laps! Hamilton is beginning to come under pressure from Alonso for P5 as Norris pulls away in P4 ahead of him.

Lap 35: Verstappen leads once again! The Dutch driver gets down the inside at corner 2 to regain control of this race.

Lap 33: Verstappen is taking absolute chunks out of Leclerc’s lap times as he looks to regain the lead of the Austrian Grand Prix. The Ferrari man’s lead is down to 2.1 seconds.

Lap 31: Perez is the latest to overtake on track as he surpasses Russell for P8.

Lap 27: Norris gets past Hamilton for P4 on track. It’s a great move from the McLaren driver as he powers past his fellow countryman down the back straight.

— Formula 1 (@F1) July 2, 2023

Sainz takes a five second penalty! That could be very significant in his charge for a podium finish here.

Lap 26: Verstappen overtakes Sainz! It’s a lovely move at corner two as he takes the tighter line and outdrags the Ferrari man. He’ll go after chasing Leclerc for the lead of this race again.

Lap 25: Verstappen is in and it’s a rapid stop but he can’t beat Sainz out of the pit lane. Leclerc leads this race as a result for now which ends the Dutch driver’s 249 lap record for leading in F1.

Ocon takes a five second penalty.

Lap 23: On fresher tyres, Hamilton is really piling the pressure on Perez. The Mexican driver defends for now but it seems a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ for the Brit.

Sainz is the latest to receive a black and white flag.

Lap 21: Sainz is already flying here! He now gets past Perez to regain P3 on his fresher tyres.

There’s some stunning racing going on here between the cars in the middle of the pack. Albon, Ocon, Magnussen and Stroll keep exchanging places.

Lap 20: Just a few laps later and Tsunoda also gets a five second penalty for track limits.

In the last few laps, Sainz has got past both Norris and Hamilton for P4 on track.

Lap 18: The first penalty of the afternoon goes to Hamilton who gets a five second penalty for exceeding track limits too many times. He is not best happy about that..

Lap 16: The VSC finishes and everyone has pit aside from Verstappen and Perez. Leclerc sits between the pair in P2 with Hamilton, Norris and Sainz rounding out the top six for now.

Lap 14: Hamilton has already received a black and white flag for exceeding track limits too many times. One more and that’s a penalty.

Elsewhere the yellow flags are out as Hulkenberg is forced to retire from this race due to an engine issue. It’s now upgraded to a virtual safety car as Hamilton and Norris pit.

— Formula 1 (@F1) July 2, 2023

Lap 13: Hulkenberg makes the first pitstop of this race as the skies begin to get darker overhead. We’re not suppose to have rain this afternoon but that look threatening!

Lap 10: The battle between the Ferrari pair intensifies. Sainz asked for the pass on his radio but to no avail.

Hamilton is struggling with a brake issue for now as he looks to defend from Norris. Perez gets past Russell for P11.

— Formula 1 (@F1) July 2, 2023

Lap 8: DRS is enabled for the first time but Leclerc won’t have access to it. He’s too far behind Verstappen and is now under big pressure from his teammate here. Team orders?

Down the order, Russell and Perez are fighting over P11.

Lap 6: Verstappen puts in the fastest lap of this race so far as he opens up a 1.2 second gap to Leclerc in P2.

Sainz, Hamilton, Norris and Alonso follow closely behind.

Lap 4: The safety car returns to the pits and we’re back under way here.

Replays show that Tsunoda clipped the back of Ocon and lost his front wing as a result. All debris is cleared now though and all 20 drivers are still in this race.

— Formula 1 (@F1) July 2, 2023

LIGHTS OUT: It’s away we go at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg and Verstappen just about leads for now! Leclerc challenges him several times but the Dutchman manages to just about hold off his advances.

The safety car is out after Tsunoda sustains damage.

2 minutes to lights out: We’re off for the formation lap ahead of the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix.

15 minutes to lights out: The drivers are now heading to the front of the grid for the national anthem.

We’ll also have a minute silence following the tragic loss of 18-year-old driver Dilano van ‘t Hoff yesterday at Spa.

30 minutes to lights out: The pit lane is open and all of the cars have made their way to the grid for today’s race.

Unlike yesterday, it’s dry weather for now which will definitely suit Verstappen out in front.

45 minutes to lights out: After his battle with Perez for the lead of the Sprint yesterday, Verstappen will instead have Leclerc and Sainz to deal with today in this Grand Prix.

The Ferrari pair will be hoping to team up on the Red Bull driver and they’ll have to get past him very early on or it’ll likely be curtains for their chances of a win this afternoon.

1 hour to lights out: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix taking place at the Red Bull Ring high up in the Alps.

Max Verstappen took the Sprint victory yesterday but can he claim the full Grand Prix win again today?

A fourth #F1Sprint win in the bag for mighty Max Verstappen 🦁#AustrianGP #F1Sprint @Max33Verstappen @redbullracing pic.twitter.com/Bu7tN2NGRD
